RolePlayConvention – What I expected, what I got

RPC took place in Cologne last Weekend. So, since Cologne-Trade-Fair is not
far from my homke (or Hace’s or Diegos), we decided to jump over and to see
if the cons so clichee as expected.
So, what did we expect?
LARPlers drinking Met out of horns and battling
eacht other with their weapons? Check.
Pen&Paper Gurus which can construct a new adventure in about half a minute?
check.
VideoGamers playing the latest mmos? check.

Basically, one of the major magnets for visitors was another introduction of
a new real time strategy game – battleforge. Wait, what? A rts game as the
main catcher in a role play trade-fair? What the buck?
Battleforge is a rts game heavily based on Trading-Card-Games – such as
Magic the Gathering (r), Yu-Gi-Oh (r), Pokemon (r) , the list continues
endless.
Every second in this game, you gain Energie, which is used to cast magic.
Every spell is a Card, and is treaded like every card in a game. It waits in
your hand, and you can use it as often as you want – paying the price, of
course.
You can increase your mana ( im calling it mana because its more familiar to
me ) by controlling some sort of objects spreaded around the map. Easy
principe : the more knots you control, the more mana you get, the faster you
can cast your devastating spells, and then the victory comes closer. But
dont expect your enemie to be a sitting duck.
As you can summon your spells everywhere on the map, Battleforge is a very
fast game. There are, however, regulations for summoning. Summoning a
creature in one of your bases will give them a full 100% hp when summoned.
Creatures summoned on “free field” or even the enemies base will only have
50% hp, which increases slowly to 100%. If they arent under attack, of
course.
Battleforge really bases on much strategy – if youre not the great
strategist ( no, im not looking in my mirror now… aw, i did it <-< ),
youre toast. A Battleforge match usally takes about 10-30 minutes, and it
can be played completly with a mouse without having disadvantages. Cool, eh?

Furthermore, we had more mmorpgs like runes of magic, which will not run
with my little netbook. Why doesnt the xbox support those games…
whyyyyyyyyy Q_Q . Another precious titles for xbox, ps3 and pc. Nothing
special here. In the middle of hall 1, there was a video game shop, nothing
related to roleplaying. And the Roccats-Stage didnt actually filled the
rpg-mood , it destroyed it.

Haces dream became true : he spoke to one of his favorite artists, Marvin
Clifford. If youre not in Germany and reading “Shakes and Fidget”, youll not
know him. But let me say : he and his pal do a great job on their
WoW-Parody.

We had many places with larp-equipment, even a shop who rented full-plated
armor! To bad I lack body-power, I bet it would feel great =D . Many Horns
were sold, even more larp equipment, and there were many cosplayers. Even a
Ragnarok-Online High Priest. Me and Hace inmediatly went to her, yelling
“Heal please! Zeny please! Item please! Tank please!” . She laughed shy and
left. What a pity ._.

Overall, it was a trade-fair. But it was to much of a games convention in th
rpc to be a roleplay-convention. At least I can look forward on looting even
more roccats shirts at the games com . Me, Hace and Diego got 14 TShirts.
Now they’ve become a new wall-accesoire. Sorry, but me wearing xl-shirts? No
fucking way!

I think me and my school friend were looking for weeks thru’ the internet for THAT thing. And finally, we found a whol bunch of Information about ASSASSIN’S CREED II, the second part of the trilogy.

UPDATE: April 17th, 2009
2nd UPDATE: June 3rd, 2009

ScrewAttack posted a Video about various new games these days, also about AC2. The part about AC2 mostly reveals every information that is known and confirmed. For all the ones who don’t want to watch the video, here the facts:

– The game plays in 1486 A.D., in Venice, Italy.
– The new ancestor of Desmond is called “Ezio Auditore de Firenze”.
– The whole game happens in and around Venice, but also will travel to the Tuscany.
– Leonardo DaVinci will be your supporter by creating various useful gadgets and tools for you.
– Ezio will be able to swim, also he’s got TWO Hiddenblades, also the second Hiddenblade includes a “gun”.

The gameplay is mostly the same as in the first game, but there will be 16 missions throughout the game, a bunch of unique Enemies, like Archers, elite warriors, “dagger-fighters”, also some heavy-armored soldiers with two swords (as far as confirmed). Also, there will be a lot more weapons, like axes, hammers, maces, spears, two different sword-types, a spear-axe and two different types of shortswords, an amout of 9 different weapon types. Also the Hiddenblades. Additional to the ability to swim and the old features, like climbing walls, you’ll be also able to rob the enemy’s weapons at purpose. The AI of the enemies has been refined, so they will also lurk in the environment and wait for you. As confirmed, popular victims during the game will be Lorendo de Medici, but also Machiavelli and Caterina Sofrza.
The bonus objects from the first part, the annoying flags, are findable again in the second part, along with statues and “gold pieces”, but this time, the objects will bring you real additional features in the game, and not just the achievements.

Release of the game is this year’s Holidays, currently approx. 240 developers work on the game.

Check out a considered Packshot and Screenshots from the new Game.
BREAKING NEWS: A special demo of AC2 was shown at the E3. It shows detailful graphics and a whole bunch of new techniques and tactics, like throwing smoke grenades, but also it shows one of the most impressing new gagdets, the flying machine of DaVinci.

At least now I know why TWO Hiddenblades.
I’ll keep this up-to-date.

Tip of the Now: OGame

For all the ones who love games about sci-fi, space empires and imagination, but also for the ones that are hanging around in the internet full of boredom, OGAME, the strategic browsergame, is a good advice.

OGame is made by the GameForge AG, and is spread all over the world with even multiple languages. The german OGame.de consists of at the moment 76 different servers, each of them filled with almost over 9000 (!) Players.
The only thing you need to play Ogame is a common internet browser, like Firefox or IE.

But what happens in OGame?

You are a new space emperor. You just colonized a new planet and you are now about to create your own space empire, constisting of a mine production, a science laboratory where you improve your empire, and a spaceshipyard, where you construct a destructive Fleet to either steal the ressources of other, weaker emperors or either crush their fleets. You get points for building up your empire, your defense and your fleet, also for everthing you spend ressources on.
There are 4 ressources in Ogame, each one more worth the other:

Metal – A common ressource, used for almost everything. Biggest extraction.
Crystal – Rarer than metal, used mostly for science and spaceships. A “Crystal-absence” can come up with time.
Deuterium – Know as Heavy Hydrogen and used for science and as spaceship fuel. Very weak extraction.
Dark Matter – A special ressource, can be found at expeditions and mostly be bought for money. You can spend Dark Matter for special account upgrades.

During the years OGame existed, the Players took out tactis the inventors didn’t even plan. OGame has turned into a high-class, flexible and intelligent browsergame. Also, coders invented various tools and addons to make OGame even more interesting and easier to play.

The biggest deal about OGame is the following fact: NO HUGE GRAPHICS.
The only thing you see is a screen where you can click on buildings so a timer goes down till the building is finished, or some Warning like “Enemy fleet approching in 5 minutes” (of course better than I said here :P). Nevertheless, millions of players all over the world are fascinated by OGame.

During time, some servers got special conditions, like double-speed, a bigger universe itself, or Defense2Debris. OGame is developing itself without stopping, and most developments came from players of OGame.

As I’m an OGamer it should be a crime to say something bad about OGame, but, in case of neutrality, I have to do that:

– A big problem for now are the universe deaths. Due to games like World of Warcraft, OGame’s player community count fell harshly down in the last two years. In 2007, The average of players per server at OGame.de was about 10.000, now it’s nearly 8.000. Because of the Deaths, several OGamers came up with “raising projects for newbies” where they teach new players about tricks in the game.

– Another problem would be the development of the game, leading to a big complexity for newbies. New players are not aware of the multiple tactics in OGame, and can lose the fun fast. The raising projects are also made to solve this problem.

– Time: The average OGamer has a online-time of approx. 5 hours a day. It’s needed to stay up-to-date, to be within competition, since everyone is hunting for a high ranking – and for points. The game is not fitted for average or weak internet users who spend max. 2 hours a day on the internet. You can’t play with that short time.

OGame is a very interesting and long game – and in my opinion, it can really compete with all those awesome-ass graphic game, since you have to use your imagination.
I recommend the game for everyone who’s filled with boredom and is hanging around in the internet 24/7.

Lock’s Quest – Real-Time Strategy on NDS
April 3, 2009, 5:28 pm
Filed under: DS, Related | Tags: ,

I found this game when I was surfing around the web for the Top 50 NDS Games. “A mix between, Real-time Strategy and Role Play Game”. I get this game and started it. You can read the plot of the game and then you can play.

The Story is simple: A long time ago a man called Lord Agony with the original aim to rule the world by controlling a mysterious substance called “Source”, invaded the world with a huge army of  Clockworkers. This are robots which can Move,  destroy and kill things and humans but only for a short amount of time. A big war between the Royal Army and Lord Agony’s Army flares up. Someday a very good “Archineer”,  this are People who can build Fortresses with using “Source”, break the defence to Lord Agony’s castle and Killed him. The world was saved.

Lock live with his sister in a small fisher village. Someday a Clockwork Army invaded the peaceful village. Lock, who’s an Archineer recruit, defend his village with building towers and walls. Normally Clockworkers kill every human which they can find and chase, but, I don’t know why, the Clockworkers kidnapped Locks Sister. Now Lock have to find his sister and have to help the Royal Army to defend the whole Kingdom.

You can surely compare “Lock’s Quest” to a sort of flash games called: “Tower Defence”. This is a  popular mode which also founds his way into other games like Warcraft 3. The Gameplay is complicated at the beginning but you get familiar with it in time. The battles in “Lock’s Quest” are slpittet in two phases. Phase one is the building phase. You have a short amount of time to build up some walls and canons. This is not everything what you can build. You can build traps and towers and some other cool things. For every thing you build or repair you have to use “Source”.

But you use up to much source with build traps and stuff like that. (Traps disappear after every wave by the way) The only way to fill up your store of “Source” is to play stupid mini-games or to hope you survive the current level to get more “Source” from the “Source-Stock”,  you have to defend mostly, or kill some Clockworkers.

When the time is over, this is mostly like 2-3 minutes, the battle phase begins. Different than in other Tower Defence games, you have the possibility to interfere in the fight. Lock can move around and repair the defence. Which is definitely needed. He also can fight. Lock have some Special Moves which he can use by performing little mini-games with the stilus.

The Clockworker attacks in waves like 3-4 times. After the 2nd wave your motivation is either like: WUHU!!!! or like: *head-desk* or in the worst case: *pick up a gun… . The fight is lacking in varieties. You build up your defence… fight… repair your defence… and fight. The only thing that changes are the Clockworker, which has different units which can spell for example or heal, fly over or dig under your walls and towers.

Fazit:
In my opinion “Lock’s Quest” could have more potential if the developers take more care ’bout the RPG part of the game. Sure at first this is Tower Defence with story, but I think to hold these huge army of Clockworkes which invade every f*cking single place of the world  with like 50-60 Clockworkers per wave and you have to survive more than 3 waves, is quietly hard without more strength. If you could upgrade Lock the game would be more interesting.
But in fact this is a good game with a nice ambiente and a good idea.

- No facts this time =3
