Since a short time I started to collect the Mario Games for the NDS. Games like: “Mario Party DS”, “Mario Kart DS” or “New Super Mario Bros.”. And there’s also “Mario & Luigi – Partners in Time”, which is very interesting for me because Luigi is my favourit character from all the characters from the Super Mario Universe. Seriously! Make more games with Luigi as main character. “Luigi’s Mansion” was a nice game! But for now I’ll review “Mario & Luigi – Partners in Time”.
The Story begins with an short introduction, that a strange lifeforms form outerspace is heading to earth, to overtake the power of the Mushroom Kingdom. In the present time, the adult Mario and Luigi awaits the arrival of their Princess Peach, who traveld back in time with a Timemachine to visit the Mushroom Kingdom of the past. But when the Time Machine arrives, a purple Shroom jumps out of the machine and attacks the Mario Bros.. After a short battle, Mario and Luigi jumps into a Timewarp, and found out that the Princess was kidnapped by the Princess of the Shroobs, which are the aliens. In the past Mario and Luigi met their self when their were babys. From this point, the four brothers start the battle against the Shroob Kingdom, to save the past and the Princess Peach of the future
The Gameplay is a mix with Jump ‘n Run and RPGs. You run around, you can jump, walk, do special moves to reach special points, and you can fight against enemys. But this is not like in the further Mario Games, expect Mario & Luigi – Superstra Saga for the Gameboy Advance or another Mario game, in this game you fight in RPG style against the monsters. The system ist round based, what means. The fastest attacks first. Very cool is the action-button system. The most items you use or attacks you perform, requires the push auf a button in the right moment, to make stronger attacks or to perform combos. After a victoriuos battle you gain Experience so you can level up, and you gain coins to buy better equipment or new batlle items. Then when you get a level up, there is a Slotmachine-Bonus-Stat-System. You can choose one of your stats to give it some bonus stats. But how much you can add to your stats, depends on your luck in the slotmachine.
The Graphic is not this better than on the Gameboy Advance Version, but it looks quiet good. I like the style of art and colors in this game. But for the Nintendo DS it’s not enough but the graphic works finde.
Fazit:
I like Mario & Luigi – Partners in Time. It’s something different, when you look at further Mario Games. I also like the style of humor in this game. I’ve never ever heard Mario and Luigi say so much things. Okay it’s mostly one word or a Sound they make and no complete sentences, but it’s enough to get funny moments much funnier.
